Plastic Surgery In Canada

It is often difficult to differentiate between cosmetic surgery and plastic surgery. Indeed, aesthetic procedures are more and more diverse and the difference is subtle, which can therefore be a source of confusion.

Without forgetting that cosmetic surgeons practice, in turn, acts of aesthetic medicine such as injections of hyaluronic acid as part of the facelift.

How to Differentiate between aesthetic medicine and surgery in Canada

The difference between aesthetic medicine and surgery can be grasped by their respective definitions. Indeed, aesthetic medicine refers to the correction of what we would call a physical defect, but without surgery. On the other hand, cosmetic surgery necessarily involves an intervention.

By definition, according to the National Union of Aesthetic Doctors, aesthetic medicine refers to all acts aimed at preventing, repairing, and correcting features that are not very aesthetic or considered as such by the patient. This mainly concerns the natural consequences of aging.

Aesthetic medicine also refers to anti-aging medicine, that is to say, all the medical practices implemented to counteract the effects of aging on the skin. It is therefore part of a framework of anti-aging prevention in addition to the well-being it can provide by maintaining a beautiful bodily appearance.

Aesthetic medicine is involved in several techniques and practices such as injections of hyaluronic acid, mesotherapy (introduction under the dermis of low doses of medication), the laying of tensor threads, the treatment of baldness via hair transplantation, the treatment of hyper-pilosity, anti-dark spot treatments, stimulating sessions of laser for skin impurities (scars) or photomodulation by an LED light.

Often, the substances injected are already present in the body and in the skin but tend to diminish over time. In this case, mention is made of hyaluronic acid, collagen, and vitamins.

Nevertheless, cosmetic surgery refers to the correction of a precise and particular defect. This also belongs to the field of plastic surgery. It aims to improve the physical appearance of a person through surgery and concerns both the face and the body. The operation can also be reconstructive, by correcting sequelae or a birth defect; its purpose is therefore functional but is also aesthetic in a second place.

In addition, the act must be carefully thought out since it involves a permanent physical change, which is why the procedure to be followed is strict: a period of reflection of 15 days, an interview with the anesthesiologist, several preoperative consultations with the surgeon, and a follow-up with a psychologist, if necessary. Finally, like any surgical operation, it induces stress, anxiety, and anguish, with risks taken and postoperative recovery and an irreproachable lifestyle.

Main differences

The main dissimilarities between aesthetic medicine and surgery are:

Aesthetic medicine is softer, less invasive. It is limited to superficial tissues, thus avoiding general anesthesia and heavy postoperative consequences. Indeed, we, therefore, avoid hospitalization and we can directly resume normal activity when leaving the office. As for cosmetic surgery, it requires a minimum sick leave of two weeks, varying from one operation to another.

However, the results it provides are often short-lived and reversible. This is why it is necessary to think of renewing the act regularly in order to maintain an optimal appearance. If we take the example of lifting, the latter allows rejuvenation of up to 10 years (cosmetic surgery) while the effect of aesthetic medicine treatments goes up to a maximum of one year.

In aesthetic medicine, several sessions are required in order to obtain an optimal aesthetic appearance, whereas surgery requires only one single intervention, followed by regular check-ups.

Cosmetic surgery leads to a  complete physical transformation, while aesthetic medicine is limited to the reduction of sagging skin, wrinkles, tired looks, and sagging.

Aesthetic medicine improves the appearance of the face on a daily basis and is practiced by the vast majority, while surgery remains more complex, more meticulous, aiming to eradicate a specific complex. It, therefore, corrects defects that aesthetic medicine cannot correct on its own.

Surgery leads to great social eviction with great constraints during convalescence. Indeed, it is necessary to wait a certain period of time before resuming a social and professional activity. While this is not at all the case with aesthetic medicine, you just have to take precautions.

The surgical operation causes bruises, swollen areas, and more or less significant pain, which will be alleviated by analgesics and painkillers. However, the interventional suites of aesthetic medicine only give a feeling of discomfort and some inconvenience in the areas that have just been treated (such as a warming sensation in the place that has just undergone a peeling).

Where to go for Plastic Surgery in Canada?

Making the choice between cosmetic medicine and surgery can be difficult. They both have the same objective: to beautify and rejuvenate. Only their practices differ; it is then necessary to decide according to the objectives of the patients and the resources they intend to invest. The success of the intervention depends above all on the chosen practitioner, his experience, his dexterity, and his precision. In addition, the practices prescribed for some patients are not necessarily suitable for others. To make the best decision and obtain an optimal appearance, it is necessary to study the perspective of his face and the harmony of his silhouette.
