Researchers at the University of Yokohama, Japan have developed a method for cultivating capillary germ cells that could emerge as a new treatment to cure baldness in a few years.
The therapy involves the regeneration of hair follicles but the biggest challenge so far was the preparation of these follicular germs in greater quantities.
A recent publication in the journal Biomaterials described the success in producing 5,000 follicular germs simultaneously and reported the re-growth of these implanted follicles in a mouse.
The key to the success of this preparation on a larger scale was the choice of material for the growth of these cells, according to Junji Fukuda, a professor at the University of Yokohama, PDMS (oxygen-permeable dimethylpolysiloxane) was used to culture these cells and it was a success.
The researchers tested the method's effectiveness by implanting a group of 300 cells called an “HFG chip” into a mouse. The birth of hairs at the implanted sites, both on the back and on the scalp, was confirmed.
According to Fukuda, this method is very consistent and promising and it is expected that this technique will improve hair regeneration therapies for the treatment of androgenetic alopecia.
According to the researcher, tests on humans will still take more than 5 years and the method's viability will not happen for 10 years.
